Venmo Redesign

Project overview: In this personal redesign project, I reimagined Venmo’s core screens to better support users’ financial habits. I transformed the home screen into a more functional dashboard with weekly spending summaries, payment reminders, top contacts, and smart suggestions. The search page was updated to highlight top friends and contacts, while the transaction history now includes toggleable views for sent vs. received payments and filters by week, month, or year for easier tracking.

Most peer-to-peer payment apps, like Venmo, offer convenience—but often at the expense of clarity and user control. Users frequently face cluttered interfaces, lack context around transactions, and struggle to track their financial activity in a meaningful way.

This led me to my guiding “How Might We” questions:

Empathizing With Users

  1. How might we make the home feed more clear and meaningful for users?

  2. How might we help users quickly understand who paid whom, while improving the way users track their past transactions?

  3. How might we simplify the search page for users?

To better understand user frustrations with Venmo, I conducted secondary research by analyzing feedback from online blog posts, design critiques, and community forums. I synthesized these insights to identify recurring themes in the user experience. This helped surface recurring pain points around Venmo’s cluttered feed, lack of transaction filters, and unclear features—informing key opportunities for improvement.

Low Fidelity Wireframes

1) Paper Wireframe

I sketched a paper wireframe to explore the redesigned layout of the transaction history page. The sketch focuses on organizing the transaction page so users can easily find payment history by filtering based on week, month, year, and all.

2) Digital Sketch Wireframe

I created a digital wireframe of the redesigned Venmo homepage to explore a cleaner, more functional layout. This version introduces visual spending summaries, payment reminders, top contacts, and smart suggestions—designed to help users quickly understand their financial activity without the clutter of the original feed.

3) Digital Wireframes

Then, I further expanded my wireframe by creating a digital wireframe for the homepage, search page, and transaction page. This way, I brainstormed how key features like spending summaries, smart suggestions, and filtering options could be structured visually to improve clarity and usability.


High Fidelity Prototypes

The redesigned Venmo homepage highlights four key features to improve usability: a visual diagram showcasing weekly spendings, payment reminders, people they interact with the most, and smart suggestions based on user activity. To enhance discoverability, the search function– previously limited to the top bar– was moved to the main bar, making it easier to find other users. The transaction page was also updated with filter options, allowing users to quickly navigate and review their payment history.
